Crust & Crumb Academy - More Than Bread: A Community That Inspires

I came for sourdough… and stayed for the community! Crust & Crumb Academy first showed up on my YouTube feed back in March 2026 while I was searching for ways to bake homemade sourdough bread. I had absolutely no experience baking bread. Honestly, I never had the patience for it. It was far easier to buy bread at the store than to learn how to make it myself. But when my favorite sourdough disappeared from the shelves, I started searching for recipes to recreate it at home… and that search sent me straight down the rabbit hole of sourdough baking. Somewhere along the way, Henry Hunter’s community, Crust & Crumb Academy, popped up. I saved the page for later because the information he shared was incredibly helpful. But I assumed the academy would probably be expensive, and with everything else going on in life and health, I really didn’t want to add one more paid program to my plate. Then I clicked the link. I kept looking for the cost… and couldn’t find one. Finally, I hit “Join” and realized there was absolutely no cost at all. Instead, I found free education, endless resources, and a genuine community—with no sales pitch and no catch. What I found was one of the warmest, most generous, uplifting online communities I’ve experienced in a very long time. There’s laughter. Friendship. Encouragement. Education. Real connection. And the best part? You can actually talk to Henry himself. Ask questions. Get advice. Learn the art of baking—not just sourdough, but enriched breads, yeasted breads, ciabatta, poolish methods, different starters, fermentation techniques, and so much more. The amount of knowledge shared inside this community is incredible. I originally joined just wanting to learn sourdough. What I found instead was a group of like-minded people who genuinely enjoy helping one another grow. The Saturday bake-along is one highlight of the week. Henry guides everyone through the process with prep instructions throughout the week so you know exactly what to expect and what you’ll need. Then, during the actual bake-along, the community comes alive—people sharing wins, struggles, questions, photos, frustrations, breakthroughs, and encouragement in real time. Henry steers the ship beautifully, but he also gives the community room to truly be a community. That’s what makes this place special. One of Henry’s sayings is: “Perfection is not required. Progress is.” You can feel that spirit throughout the entire academy. I deeply appreciate Henry’s generosity, his love for people, his passion for baking, and the way he genuinely listens to the community. Henry welcomes suggestions. Questions get answered. Nobody feels forgotten. Everyone matters here. Personally, I’ve learned so much already—hydration levels, starter care, fermentation timing, dough handling, shaping, troubleshooting… things I never imagined I would understand or enjoy. And my favorite so far? Ciabatta. I absolutely love working with high-hydration dough now. Never in a million years did I think dough would be so fun to work with, but it truly is. Baking has become incredibly therapeutic for me. Had a rough day? Go make bread. Grab a cup of coffee (or favorite drink) and meet with community members who quickly become friends. There’s something deeply satisfying about pulling a beautiful loaf from the oven with a crust you never thought you could create yourself. If you’re looking to learn how to bake—or simply longing for genuine community in a world that desperately needs more of this — I cannot recommend Crust & Crumb Academy enough. This is more than bread making. It’s community at its finest.

Tired of bread recipes that don't work and questions that get buried in Facebook comments? Crust & Crumb Academy is a free bread baking community built for home bakers who want real results without the gatekeeping. Learn sourdough and yeasted bread through structured courses, tested recipes, and direct feedback from Henry Hunter, a working baker with 26 years of marketing experience, author of "Sourdough for the Rest of Us" and "From Oven to Market," and founder of the 50,000+ member Facebook group Baking Great Bread at Home. What you get: → Step-by-step courses on sourdough, shaping, scoring, and fermentation → 28+ tested recipes in our Recipe Pantry → A glossary with 130+ baking terms explained → A small enough community that your questions actually get answered No fluff. No intimidation. No cost. Just bakers helping bakers get better. Perfection is not required. Progress is.

Mission & Values

We believe perfection is not required and gatekeeping has no place in bread baking. Our mission is to help home bakers build real skills through structured learning, honest feedback, and a community that coaches rather than just cheers. We value progress over perfection, patience over shortcuts, and helping each other get better over showing off.

Perfection Is Not Required Progress matters more than perfect loaves. Every bake teaches you something. We celebrate growth, not just Instagram-worthy results.

No Gatekeeping Knowledge is meant to be shared. We don’t hoard techniques or make beginners feel stupid for asking questions. If you want to learn, you belong here.

Trust the Process Bread takes time. Skill takes time. We teach patience and help you understand the “why” so you stop chasing shortcuts that don’t work.

Coaching Over Cheerleading “Looks great!” doesn’t help you improve. We give honest, constructive feedback because we actually want you to get better.

Read Your Dough, Not Just the Clock Recipes are guides, not laws. We teach you to understand what your dough is telling you so you can adapt to your kitchen, your schedule, and your ingredients.

Community Over Competition We’re not here to show off. We’re here to help each other. Your win is our win. Your struggle is something we’ve probably faced too.

Show Up and Bake Learning happens by doing. We encourage you to get your hands in dough, make mistakes, ask questions, and keep going.

The Transformation

From someone who follows recipes and hopes for the best to a baker who understands the process, trusts their hands, and never needs to guess again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Q: What makes Crust & Crumb Academy different from other baking communities?▾

A: Two words: coaching, not cheerleading. Most baking groups online will give you a heart emoji and tell you everything looks great. We give you honest feedback that actually makes you a better baker. Founded by Henry Hunter, author of "Sourdough for the Rest of Us" and "From Oven to Market," the Academy covers sourdough, yeasted breads, enriched doughs, discard recipes, and even how to sell at farmers markets. Weekly Saturday bake-alongs, 65+ recipes in our Recipe Pantry app, and structured courses that take you from first loaf to confident baker.

Q: Q: Is Crust & Crumb Academy really free?▾

A: Yes. The core community, courses, weekly Saturday bake-alongs, Recipe Pantry app, and access to 600+ fellow bakers are completely free. No trial period. No bait and switch. We also offer premium courses like "From Oven to Market" for bakers ready to turn their passion into a farmers market bread business. But most members never pay a dime and still completely transform their baking. We believe great bread education shouldn't have a price tag on it.

Q: Q: Who is Crust & Crumb Academy for?▾

A: Everyone. Seriously. If you’ve never baked a loaf in your life, we’ll walk you through it step by step. If you’ve been baking for years and want to sharpen your skills, we’ve got advanced courses and a community that will push you. If you want to sell bread at a farmers market, we literally wrote the book on it. Beginners, hobbyists, aspiring cottage bakers… all welcome. The only requirement is that you’re willing to learn. Perfection is not required. Progress is.

The whole concept is great and I'm learning more about sourdough.

The whole concept is great and I'm learning more about sourdough. I tried the pancakes yesterday and they were a hit. The pretzel bread is very good just a lot of steps.
