How do you delete a Google Business Profile?

Google gives you three separate routes, and only one is a true delete. Marking the business closed is reversible. Removing the profile content and managers is permanent, and only primary owners can do it. The third asks Google to remove a place that shouldn't exist.

You mark a business closed in the Hours section. Removal runs from Business Profile settings, then Remove Business Profile. Your posts, photos and replies are deleted for good, and customer reviews stay. New owners and managers wait 7 days first.

The catch is that removal doesn't guarantee the listing leaves Search and Maps, and you must verify again to manage it. If the business is shutting down, I'd mark it closed first.

Should I mark the business closed instead?

If you might reopen, yes. Select Edit profile, then Hours, choose a closure status and save. The listing then shows as Temporarily closed or Permanently closed on Maps and Search.

Temporarily closed is for closures longer than 7 days, such as off-season or indefinite breaks. For 7 days or less, use Special hours.

A closed profile can be reopened, including one marked Permanently closed by mistake. Removed content can't come back.

How do I remove the profile content and managers?

This is the permanent route. It affects every owner and manager on the profile.

  1. Go to business.google.com and select More, then Business Profile settings.
  2. Select Remove Business Profile.
  3. Choose Remove profile content and managers.
  4. Tick Mark your business as permanently closed if it applies, then select Continue.
  5. Select Remove, then Done.

Posts, photos, videos and review replies you added are deleted for good. Customer reviews stay. Google says the removed content can't be recovered or managed.

Who is allowed to delete a Google Business Profile?

Google's removal page says only primary owners can remove the profile content and managers. Its roles page lists owners as able to delete, so the two pages differ.

Go by the narrower rule and find out who your primary owner is. How to add a user to Google Business Profile shows the roles.

What if the profile still shows after removal?

That can happen. Google says removing all ownership and content doesn't guarantee the business leaves Search and Maps. After removal it might still show up, unless it's an ineligible business.

If you marked it permanently closed during removal, Google says it won't disappear from Maps right away.

How do I remove a listing that isn't mine?

For a place that doesn't exist or isn't eligible, anyone signed in can ask. In Maps, select Suggest an edit, then Place is closed or not here. Google says you can do this without owning the profile.

If an old employee or agency controls your own profile, don't make a new listing. Go to business.google.com/add, find the business, select Request Access and submit. The owner has 3 days to respond.

A business with no shop address goes through Google support instead, with the issue "Transfer ownership of listing". If a profile was disabled instead, read how to appeal a suspension.

If you close a Google profile, ProveWorth still gives your business a free page of its own with your customer reviews on it. Join for a free page or look at how it works.
